Kourtney Kardashian is very strict when it comes to her diet. In fact, the reality star even starves herself from time to time.

The 38-year-old broke down her daily routine and wrote about her intermittent fasting in a new post shared on her app. According to her, going without food for long periods of time is actually “good for you.”

“Last year, after my doctor said I had high levels of metals in my blood, I did a lot of research on fasting and detoxing. Part of my detox involved intermittent fasting, which I did for 2-3 months and will definitely try to do again this year at some point,” she began, explaining she has two approaches to fasting.

For the “16/8 Method,” she wrote she will not eat for 14 to 16 hours after dinner. “I can go for 16 hours, but other days I just do 14 hours. Basically, this means I’ll have dinner at 6 p.m., then I won’t have breakfast until 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. the following day,” she shared. “There’s a lot of research that says you should eat your biggest meal of the day in the morning—and that dinner should be light and early.”

Kourtney explained the reason she will eat a big breakfast as opposed to a heavy dinner is because “digestion and the way insulin breaks down carbohydrates are more efficient in the morning.”

“For this reason, I try not to eat heavy food late at night and try to wait 14 to 16 hours before having breakfast,” she continued. “When I do have breakfast, I always have a protein-rich smoothie in the morning and a big healthy salad with protein for lunch.”

To push things further, Kourtney admitted she’ll sometimes fast for 24 hours on days with a packed schedule and little to no time for snacking. “Sometimes, I mix in a 24-hour fast, which is definitely hard and I try to plan it strategically on a day when I’m really busy,” she shared.

“On these fasting days, I drink bone broth and water all day, and then I’ll have dinner that evening. It’s really important to stay hydrated, so water is key—but you can also have green tea, so I’ll have a few of those too,” she wrote. “When I do this type of intermittent fasting for one day, I have an early dinner, go to bed and, when I wake up, I wait to eat a meal until 6 p.m. that night. So, basically, I just skip breakfast and lunch on fasting days.”

“Both of these methods are considered ways to do intermittent fasting,” she added. “Research says that our bodies are built to perform with stretches of fasting, which has a range of possible benefits, including reduced inflammation, lower chances of diabetes, more effective weight loss and improved metabolism function.”

As for what she does eat, Kourtney previously posted on her app that she likes to end a fast with meals that “contain no grains, beans or legumes” — like salads and lean proteins — so it won’t feel so heavy on her empty stomach.

“For lunch and dinner, my meals are really clean and fresh whole foods,” she wrote. “I’ll eat chicken or fish with veggies and cauliflower rice and broccoli rice (no actual rice, but these substitutes are great, even if you’re not detoxing). I’ve gotten really into chicken paillard served with spaghetti squash and salmon with roasted asparagus.”
