Twitter Turns Super Bowl Sunday Into #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay

The movement was started by NFL player-turned-director Matthew A. Cherry.

Janet Jackson may not be taking the stage in Minneapolis on Super Bowl Sunday, but she's already taking over Twitter.

In response to Justin Timberlake returning for the halftime show 14 years after Nipplegate without the legendary singer by his side, fans have taken to social media to honor the performer in their own way. Jackson confirmed Saturday she would not be popping up as a surprise guest, adding, "Thank you for your support and I do look forward to seeing you all very soon."

The hashtag #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay quickly became the #2 trend on Twitter on Sunday morning, second to #SuperBowlSunday. Started by NFL player-turned director Matthew A. Cherry, the hashtag is designed for fans to "celebrate her the way she deserves to be celebrated!"

It all started with this tweet on Friday:

We should do a #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay this Sunday. pic.twitter.com/ab9fMexgn6

So far, the trend has already garnered the support of Janet's nephew, Taj Jackson, who tweeted on Saturday, "Yep! Major props go to @MatthewACherry for getting this party started. I'm ready for tomorrow."

Loni Love, Gabourey Sidibe, Tamron Hall, and Jussie Smollett are also among Janet's many supportive fans joining the celebration — see the best tweets below:

Time for my #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay
All the amazing things she has done (per Billboard). Time to celebrate the ICON!!!
1. She released her self-titled debut album Janet Jackson in 1982, at sixteen years old.
2. She performed on American Bandstand and Soul Train in 1982. pic.twitter.com/pkjEU2vnrz

In 1997 Janet released an anthem to a friend she lost to HIV/AIDS called Together Again. It’s a beautiful and empowering song, and the video she released with it is stunning. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/erZxhrPjZO

Janet Jackson really made one of the greatest videos of all time by herself dancing in an abandoned warehouse. "Pleasure Principle." Almost 31 years later and your faves still can't keep up. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/hGqeRh3GCj
