After the mysterious “you can’t take my youth away” teasing on social media this week, Shawn Mendes’ new song with Khalid is finally here!
“Youth” is the third song released off of Shawn’s upcoming album, and was written following the attack at Ariana Grande’s Manchester concert last year about the idea of youth- “love, happiness, joy and purity,” in Shawn’s words- being taken away.
“All of these horrible things happening in the world, all of the headlines, it felt like every day it was just being pulled more and more out of us. And I was like, ‘This is what we have to write about,'” Shawn told Beats 1.
“It’s so hard. It’s so easy to sit at a piano and talk about being in love or heartbreak or something but the hardest thing in the world is to sit at a piano and talk about what the world is going through and heartbreak in a different light.”
