Selena Gomez Almost Died From Kidney Transplant Complications
Yikes!
Selena Gomez's Kidney Transplant Put Francia Raisa Out of Commission for Months
The road to recovery was a rocky one.
Selena Gomez’s kidney donor is opening up about the singer’s life-saving transplant.
Speaking to Self, Francia Raísa revealed she had asked a social worker for help when she volunteered to donate one of her vital organs to the “Wolves” singer. Prior to the surgery, the Grown-ish star remembered being told that she would have a more difficult recovery process than her best friend.
“It’s going to be hard, the recipient is going to glow and she’s going to recover a lot faster than the donor because she’s getting something she needs and you are losing something you don’t need to lose. It’s going to be hard,” she recalled someone saying. “And it was hard … Selena and I both went through a depression.”
The 29-year-old also showed off the scar she received from the operation. “My scars do not define me. My scars tell my story,” she said. “They honestly changed my life. Not just because of Selena, but for me personally [because] life came into perspective. I learned a lot.”

Though she did have a harder time recovering, Francia revealed Selena, 25, was the one who was left with a bigger scar. “She went through some complications with hers. She has some bigger scars than I do that wasn’t expected,” she shared, explaining the former Disney Channel star also has a large scar on her leg when doctors needed to remove an artery so they could attach it to the kidney.
“You scars don’t define you. It’s a part of your story,” she continued, “and it’s part of a story that makes you special and you different.”
