Meghan Markle in Altuzarra at the Commonwealth Youth Forum: cute or too busy?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped out in London today for a much-hyped appearance at the Commonwealth Youth Forum, which is taking place as part of this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Meghan was long-scheduled to make this appearance, and she’ll also be making an appearance on Friday at a CHOGM event. This is all very notable because Meghan is merely the fiancee of a prince, she hasn’t even married into The Firm yet and they’re already giving her big, important events to do.

For today’s appearance, Meghan wore an outfit which… I do not like. I’m a fan of her style, God knows. I love trousers, and I specifically love trousers on a royal (or soon-to-be-royal) woman. I feel like this would have been a good moment for a great, sharp pantsuit, or even a skirt-suit. Something with clean lines, maybe from Tom Ford or Calvin Klein. But no. Meghan chose this pinstriped, buttoned and belted dress from Altuzarra, with a Kardashian-esque blazer worn cape-style. The blazer is Camilla and Marc. On top of all that, she did a cross-body bag!! THERE’S TOO MUCH HAPPENING. Pinstripes are fine. Buttons on a dress are… fine (not really). A belted dress is fine. Buttons on a blazer are fine. A crossbody bag is fine. But put all of those pieces together, and it’s sort of messy? It just doesn’t look as polished as it could look. And my God, the BUTTONS. Who is telling royal women that they need to wear so many fakakta buttons?
