Lady Gaga in Armani at the Grammys: Mother of Dragons or mother monster?
January 29, 2018I don’t begrudge Lady Gaga her career reboot, I really don’t. I just don’t get why we have to fall all over ourselves to take this reboot seriously. It’s clear – to me – that if she was still able to get attention by wearing meat dresses and singing dance-hall music, she would be doing that. But she shed that skin when it stopped being profitable, and now she’s this half-country “dive bar” singer with… feminism. Or something. And it’s fine – but why is this version given so much legitimacy? Deep thoughts, I know.
Anyway, Lady Gaga arrived on the Grammy Awards red carpet pretty early, because she was one of the first performers on. She wore this conservative Armani gown and, like, Mother of Dragons hair. The wig was not good and the “string theory” hairstyle was questionable. I also think Gaga needs to stop with high-necked looks, because she really doesn’t have the body/face for it – the higher the neck, the shorter she looks. But it’s fine, whatever.
My biggest problem was how Gaga was scheduled – the Grammys opened with Kendrick Lamar, as they should, and he brought the house down. Then Gaga went second with this pitchy ballad. And it was just kind of weird, tonally.
At the end of her performance, she said “Time’s Up.” And then she lost Best Pop Vocal Performance to Ed Sheeran. That category was four women and Sheeran, and they gave the Grammy to a dude… who wasn’t even there. Ugh.
