According to a tweet from the Savannah Air National Guard, “The United States C-130 ‘Hercules’ cargo plane from Puerto Rico Air National Guard crashed about 11:30 a.m. today near the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport with 5 people on board.”

Puerto Rico National Guard Spokesman Major Paul Dahlen said that the ill-fated plane had been in Savannah, Georgia, for several days undergoing routine maintenance.

The area's State Highway 21 has been shut down while crews clean up the crash. Names of the five people killed will be released after the next-of-kin are contacted, that National Guard said.

Christian Freeman saw the WC-130 go down and told CNN, “I heard a loud strange bang. I looked over to my right and saw the plane at very low altitude and making a hard left turn to the ground.”
