David Copperfield, who once made the Statue of Liberty disappear, is accused of making a 17-year-old’s clothes disappear without her permission after slipping something into her drink. The woman is named Brittney Lewis and she was a contestant in the “Look of the Year” modeling contest in 1988 where Copperfield was a judge. Lewis’s story was published by The Wrap.
After the show, Lewis said, Copperfield invited her to a bar. She said she had barely touched her drink when she noticed him pouring something into her glass.
“I asked, ‘What are you doing?’ and he said, ‘Oh, I’m just sharing,’” Lewis said.
She said she took a few sips after that and blacked out. The rest is hazy.
Okay, so, I’m not an expert on human behavior, but if someone pours something into your drink, don’t you at least ask what it is? This is not to excuse Copperfield’s alleged behavior. If he did drug this woman and later take advantage of her sexually as she claims, that’s exceptionally not okay. I just don’t understand why you drink something without knowing what it is.
Copperfield declined to comment to The Wrap, but he beat them to press with a social media post supporting the #metoo movement while telling people not to rush to judgement. Which seems reasonable, but it isn’t exactly a great look a day before you’re accused of sexual assault.
Copperfield mentions another incident where he was accused of sexual assault and investigated for two years by a woman who later pleaded guilty to falsely accusing a different man of sexual assault. Which doesn’t really have anything to do with this, but I guess for a guy whose greatest magic trick is getting a bunch of people not to notice he was turning the stage away from the Statue of Liberty, it’s the best he could do.
