Gwen Stefani did not ask Blake Shelton to convert to Catholicism, despite reports. The new narratives falsely claim the country singer had to switch religions as a requirement before he and Stefani get married. But Gossip Cop can exclusively bust these stories.

The articles come from sister outlets the National Enquirer and RadarOnline, which claim Shelton is “converting to Catholicism to marry” Stefani. It’s specifically alleged the country superstar is “committed to learning the Catholic catechism to please” both the songstress and her parents. “This kind of dedication from Blake would show that he’s truly in this for the long haul,” a so-called “insider” is quoted as saying in both stories.

The publications maintain “religion has become very important to Gwen again” in the wake of her divorce from Gavin Rossdale, and now it’s up to Shelton to prove it’s important to him, too, because “if she’s going to spend the rest of her life with someone, she wants him to share the same values and beliefs.” The magazine and the website further contend, “After Gwen and her parents welcomed Blake into their family, they asked him to become a Catholic as a final step to the altar.” An unnamed source asserts, “Blake didn’t blink when he asked.” The tabloid and its sister outlet also allege Shelton has “given up drinking.”

The claims, however, are provably untrue. Just two days ago, Shelton posted a photo on Twitter of himself holding a drink, with the caption, “The moon, altitude and @smithworksvodka…” Two days before that Shelton shared on Twitter another picture of himself drinking with Stefani by his side. As for the contention that the couple is preparing to wed, Shelton recently admitted he thinks about marrying Stefani, but stressed, “I don’t think it’s anytime soon or anything.” If it’s not “anytime soon” then it doesn’t make sense he’s in the process of converting to Catholicism as a prerequisite for marriage.

And while a rep for Shelton has yet to respond to a request for comment on whether he is, in fact, converting to Catholicism, Stefani’s spokesperson exclusively tells Gossip Cop it’s not true she and her parents asked him to change religions. Additionally, while Stefani and Shelton went to church together on Easter, and were seen there again later in April, merely attending Sunday services is not evidence that Shelton is actively becoming a Catholic in order to get married.

It should be noted that the National Enquirer and RadarOnline are responsible for spreading lies back in February about Stefani having suffered a miscarriage that supposedly put their wedding plans in “jeopardy.” Those tasteless claims were manufactured, and it appears these new contentions are, too. Additionally, Shelton himself recently tweeted, “99% of the things you read about [me] on social media or the internet isn’t true… I rarely even look at it anymore because I know it’s mostly fake!”
