One year ago, Gossip Cop called out HollywoodLife for spreading false stories about Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani splitting. 365 days have gone by and the couple is still together. Unfortunately, the site is also still sharing misinformation about them.
On April 20, 2017, we highlighted three problematic posts from the disreputable blog. The first piece was headlined, “Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton Split: Why She Dumped Him After Nearly 2 Years.” The report was based on a Life & Style cover story that wrongly claimed Stefani was dumping Shelton. Gossip Cop actually debunked the article, with a rep for the songstress telling us on the record that not only was the allegation “B.S.,” but no one at the magazine even contacted her camp to fact-check its untrue narrative.
To make matters worse, HollywoodLies, as the website is nicknamed, then didn’t bother to fact-check it, either. Instead of investigating and taking note of our bust, the outlet picked up the misinformation and regurgitated it. The online publication then stepped in it further with a second posting titled, “Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton: Has Struggle To Have Kids Led To Breakup?”
This, too, was based on the disputed tabloid cover story, and again the site did not bother to do any research to find out if the contentions were legitimate and accurate. But then came the third post, which blared, “Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton Split: Have ‘The Voice’ Lovers Called It Quits? — The Truth.” In that one, the blog suddenly changed course, claiming to have the “exclusive truth on the pair’s status.” Of course, that “exclusive truth” was what Gossip Cop had already reported with an on-the-record comment from Stefani’s rep.
In a matter of hours, the outlet went from insisting the couple was done to declaring the opposite. But if the publication really had “sources” and “insiders” connected to the stars, HollywoodLies would’ve been able to fact-check the Life & Style breakup claim to begin with and learn, just as Gossip Cop did, that there was no truth to it. The trajectory here was evidence that the website didn’t really have insight on what was or wasn’t going on. In fact, the site even ended its third post by asking readers, “Do you think Blake and Gwen have called it quits?”
This is why at the time, Gossip Cop bluntly pointed out that HollywoodLife’s Stefani-Shelton stories were bullsplit. While the blog was wishy-washy, we confirmed that the performers were still together. 12 months later, it’s more than apparent that we were right. Just days ago, Stefani and Shelton attended the ACMs together and then did a duet at an after-party.
Here’s why this is so important: Even though HollywoodLies proved a year ago that it didn’t have inside access when it came to the couple, the blog is still pretending to be in-the-know. Just two weeks ago, we exposed the outlet for peddling a made-up “exclusive” about Stefani and Shelton skipping an engagement and eloping. Her rep confirmed to Gossip Cop that this tale was both false and fabricated.
So the outlet is still spreading misinformation and still doesn’t have real sources. That’s a problem that we can’t overlook, and fans, as well as search engines, shouldn’t either. HollywoodLies has a clear track record that makes it evident it could not be trusted last year and still cannot be trusted today.
