Angelina Jolie never designed a clothing line, even though a tabloid claimed a year ago that she was set to partner with Tom Ford. Gossip Cop is taking a look back to see how our debunking has held up with time. It’s clear now that our reporting was correct and the story was untrue.
On April 17, 2017, we busted Star for alleging Jolie was “ready to get her groove back” and was “enlisting” Ford to help. It was claimed that in the wake of her separation with Brad Pitt, the actress was feeling like an “outsider,” so she wanted assistance from a “fashion guru” and “industry It Guy” like Ford, who is also known for his film work. The gossip magazine maintained the designer and director was willing to make Jolie his “latest project.”
A so-called “fashion insider” claimed Ford wasn’t a fan of Jolie wearing “depressing all-black ensembles and dowdy red carpet gowns,” so he planned on giving her a style makeover. To do that, asserted this supposed source, he allegedly wanted to team up on a “couture line with her and get her back to icon status.” The article, however, had a few notable omissions.
There were no specifics on when or where this collection would debut. And the outlet failed to mention that one of Jolie’s “all-black ensembles” and “dowdy red carpet gowns” was actually designed by Ford himself. In 2015, Jolie wore a black Tom Ford gown to the WSJ Innovator Awards. Were readers supposed to believe he was now criticizing his own work? The narrative hardly made sense. Perhaps that’s because there was no truth to it.
A rep for Ford told Gossip Cop on the record that it was “not true” he was partnering with Jolie on a couture fashion line. Meanwhile, a Jolie insider with whom we spoke on the condition of anonymity was unfamiliar with any such project. Now 12 months have gone by, and time has proven we were right. Jolie never designed a clothing collection with Ford, or with any other designer for that matter. Aside from Jolie working on a perfume campaign around the same time these false claims were published, she hasn’t done anything that qualifies as a fashion or beauty project in the last year.
Instead, the last 365 days have seen Jolie focusing on her family, the humanitarian causes she holds dear and her film work. The Oscar winner was accompanied by her kids to a number of events for First They Killed My Father last fall, and Jolie visited a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan in January. She signed on to produce and voice a character in The One And Only Ivan, and is expected to film Maleficent 2 this spring and summer. None of these endeavors have involved launching a clothing line. That’s because Star was wrong one year ago and remains wrong today.
