Robert Pattinson is not co-starring with Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, the new movie from Good Time directors Josh and Benny Safdie, despite inaccurate speculation on social media. Gossip Cop can help clear up the situation. We’re told Pattinson isn’t appearing in the film.
Pattinson starred in the Safdie Brothers’ 2017 thriller Good Time, for which he received some of the best reviews of his career. The actor got close with the filmmakers while working on the project, and has said in interviews he’s eager to team up with them again. Meanwhile, Deadline reported earlier this week that Sandler would be starring in the directing duo’s next movie, Uncut Gems, a drama set in New York City’s Diamond District.
The Safdies also broke the casting news on Twitter by posting a photo of Pattinson and Sandler chatting at an awards ceremony last year, along with the caption, “Cat’s out the bag.” The photo of the two stars together led to commenters speculating that Pattinson is also joining Uncut Gems, despite none of the trades announcing his involvement in the film.
One Twitter user wrote, “Wait, is Rob in this too? Because that would make me explode.” Another person asked, “Is that the ‘cat’s out of the bag’ (as in Sandler) or ‘cats out of the bag’ (as in Sandler and RP)? Good Time fans need clarification.” Another confused user asked, “Both???” There were some additional tweets questioning the meaning of the Safdie Brothers’ image, with one follower frustrated by its “cryptic” nature.
Here’s what’s happening. The Safdie Brothers’ tweet also includes the hashtag “#relay,” and the directors photoshopped a baton into Sandler’s hand in the picture. The idea here is that Pattinson is passing off the baton to Sandler to become the Safdie Brothers’ next leading man. The photo is a symbolic relay race, with Pattinson finishing his run and handing over the reigns to Sandler.
It’s understandable why one might interpret the photo incorrectly, but Pattinson isn’t involved in Uncut Gems. Gossip Cop also checked in with a source close to the situation, who confirms that the Good Time star isn’t reuniting with the Safdies on their next movie. However, it’s always possible Pattinson will team up with the duo on a future project.
It’s worth noting, Josh Safdie explained in an interview with Collider last year that Pattinson isn’t right for any of the main roles in Uncut Gems. When asked if the actor might appear in the film, the director said, “It’s about the Bukharan Jews who have taken over the Diamond District. [Pattinson] doesn’t really fit in the world.” He added, “I’m not really interested in him playing a supporting, small cameo-type character.”
