'Sex and the City' Tea, Trump and 3 More Takeaways From Cynthia Nixon's Wendy Williams Interview

Nixon reveals the "Sex and the City" moment that left her "devastated" and explains how Trump inspired her to run for office.

Cynthia Nixon made her first television appearance since announcing she's running for governor of New York on Wednesday, on "The Wendy Williams Show" of all places.

"People talk a lot to me about being a celebrity entering this race," she told Williams, about how some are not thrilled with the idea of another celebrity joining politics. "But I have to say when Andrew Cuomo ran eight years ago he was a celebrity because he was the son of Mario Cuomo."

The interview largely consisted of questions about politics and policy, avoiding the recent Kim Cattrall-Sarah Jessica Parker feud altogether. She did, however, briefly talk about "Sex and the City" and one movie moment and she really wasn't a fan of looking back.

"Sex and The City"

Williams brought up how Nixon, best known as her character Miranda Hobbes on "Sex and The City", is being backed by the show's entire cast, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and even Kim Cattrall.

The HBO hit, which ran for six seasons and then inspired two full-length films, may spark mostly positive memories in Nixon, but one moment she said left her "devastated."

At the London premiere of the first film, the entire audience applauded when Mr. Big showed Carrie Bradshaw her gigantic, new closet. "I was a little devastated by that, because it seemed to me that the show was so much about female empowerment and about women making their own choices and women standing up for what they wanted and supporting themselves." Nixon explained.

"So to have this be a kind of a climax of a film, that your very wealthy husband you know builds you a really nice closet for clothes, I thought, wow, that's not really what you what you love about the show is it?" she added. "Because that's not what we were making it for."

How Trump Inspired Her To Run

The Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner explained how Donald Trump's candidacy was a wake up call.

"I love New York and I believe so much in New York and I believe that we're a real, progressed, progressive bastion here," Nixon began. "I have to say that for me the election of Donald Trump was a real wake up call, as it was a wake up call for women across the country that if we don't like the direction our government is going in, we have to step up and we have to get involved like never before."

Although New York City has had a democratic governor for many years, there are changes that Nixon explains still need implemented. "If you want it done you have to actually get in there and do it yourself," the actress said to Williams.

The Importance of Black Women & Black Lives Matter

"If we're going to say Black Lives Matter, we have to mean it and we have to implement change," Nixon said.

Nixon and Williams also discussed how black women play a large role in creating change, especially when it comes to voting. "They are the cornerstone, the backbone of the Democratic Party," Nixon said. "We need to let them lead."

"But black women are going to stop showing up for the democratic party, if the Democratic Party doesn't start showing up for them," Nixon added.

On Stricter Gun Laws

"We have good gun laws here, but we just passed a budget … we did almost nothing to amend our gun laws," Nixon said when asked where she stands on gun control. "We have such an appetite now, that's why I'm running. There's such an appetite for real progressive change in New York state."

"After so many years of politicians promising and nothing happening, we have all these young people that are taking on the NRA and taking on the corporate gun laws," she continued. The Tony winner, who attended the March For Our Lives protest in New York, told Williams about the young generation can really make a difference. "It was amazing," Nixon recalled the march. "I think it's just an example of what can happen when regular people get involved, whose lives are impacted."

Nixon emphasized it is time for New York to expand their gun laws and shine. "There's such an appetite for real progressive change in New York state, we're letting California have all the glory and Washington and Oregon and Minnesota." Nixon explained, "There is so much we can do to really be an alternative to Donald Trump not just rhetorically but with policy to protect our people and to say that’s not how our country should be going look at we’re doing in New York."

The Legalization Of Marijuana

Nixon also shared her views on marijuana legislation. "I am absolutely for the legalization of marijuana," Nixon explained. "Let’s capture some of that revenue.”
