Blac Chyna never changed her name to “Angela Kardashian.” With Chyna and Rob Kardashian’s relationship in the news again, Gossip Cop is taking a look back at this bust from exactly a year ago. Time has proven our reporting was correct and shown the story was indeed false.

On April 3, 2017, we debunked a MediaTakeOut story about Chyna legally changing her name. In one of its typically sensational and inaccurate headlines, the blog exclaimed, “Blac Chyna Goes Down To The Social Security Office… Changes Her Name Officially… To ‘Angela Kardashian!!'” The accompanying article began by declaring, “Blac Chyna is NO MORE. Meet Angela Kardasian [sic].”

In another typo-riddled statement, the site alleged, “On Friday Afternoon Chyna drove down to the social services, and put in the paperwork to have her name officailly [sic] changed.” Showing it had no sources to substantiate its contentions, the outlet went on to admit, “It’s not clear whether she made the change because she is already married to Rob Kardashian.” The only evidence the online publication could point to was photos of Chyna carrying legal documents.

But, as Gossip Cop noted at the time, that paperwork had nothing to do with a name change. TMZ reported Chyna was actually getting work permits for her children. Even though son King Cairo was only 4 years old and daughter Dream was a mere 4 months, work permits would allow the kids to get paid for any reality TV appearances, modeling gigs or anything else that constituted employment. This had zero connection to Chyna’s on-and-off romance with Kardashian or his family’s name. But around the same time, it was also revealed that Chyna’s attempt to trademark “Angela Renee Kardashian” for merchandise had been rejected.

Now 365 days have gone by and it’s evident Chyna never changed her name then, as claimed, or at a later date. For example, in September The Blast posted an excerpt from Kardashian’s lawsuit against her, in which she was referred to as “Chyna.” And when Chyna sued Kardashian and his family the following month, she referred to herself in the filing as “Angela White,” her actual legal name. At no point in this dueling court battle, which is still ongoing, has she ever been called “Angela Kardashian” because no name change was ever made.

It’s also worth noting that, contrary to the speculation from MediaFakeOut, as it’s known, Kardashian and Chyna were never “married,” either. The pair split seemingly for good last year, and in all their disputes since then, dissolving a marriage has never been among their issues. Of course, due to their daughter Dream, they will always be linked to one another regardless. In fact, there’s reports this week suggesting Kardashian might seek to change their custody arrangements, after Chyna was in altercation at an amusement park. With the pair’s relationship once again a hot topic, it’s worth acknowledging just how wrong MediaTakeOut clearly was a year ago.
