Ellen DeGeneres never went to rehab, despite a report a year ago that insisted she was being forced into treatment. Gossip Cop busted this false story 365 days ago. Now time has proven our debunking was correct.

On April 1, 2017, we examined a questionable National Enquirer article that twisted real news into fake news. As had been widely reported at the time, DeGeneres dislocated her finger after tripping over a step and falling into a doorway. The talk show host amusingly explained the situation on her eponymous program, admitting her stumble came after “two glasses of wine” at a dinner party. The supermarket tabloid took that kernel of truth and decided to turn DeGeneres into a drunk with a failing marriage.

According to the fictional narrative, DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi had a “violent blow-up” over selling one of their homes, which led the comedienne to have a “booze-soaked collapse” that landed her in the emergency room. Consequently, the gossip magazine maintained “friends and family are insisting the beloved TV host must finally go to rehab.” A so-called “source” was quoted as saying, “Ellen needs help and she needs it now.” And if she didn’t, predicted the alleged tipster, it “could spell the end of her marriage.”

The article was peppered with sensational phrases like “brutal fight,” “drunken brawl,” “the fight to end all fights,” the “last straw,” and “battle with the bottle.” And after DeGeneres and de Rossi supposedly “nearly claim to blows,” the outlet claimed the actress, along with DeGeneres’ mother and brother, were “all pushing her to address her excessive drinking.” This wasn’t even the first time the publication made such an allegation. Gossip Cop busted a similar story back in 2014 (see below).

It was never true, though, that DeGeneres had a drinking problem. The tabloid merely decided to bring back its old claims simply because she had a minor accident, the type of fall people have every day whether they’ve had alcohol or not. Though DeGeneres joked on her show that the two glasses of wine were “what got me into this mess in the first place,” her comments were all in jest and designed to make her audience laugh. It wasn’t very funny for the magazine to then use them for a manufactured rehab story.

One of our impeccable contacts exclusively told Gossip Cop that the outlet’s version of events were “nonsense” and there was no real reason for DeGeneres to go to rehab. Sure enough, she never sought treatment. Her marriage didn’t “end,” either. In fact, DeGeneres and de Rossi have spent this week showing off their “spring break” trip on Instagram. Clearly, the publication was wrong on all counts.
