More Untrue Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Wedding Rumors

Gossip Cop is taking another look at wrong rumors about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s upcoming wedding. With the nuptials now just one day away, it’s more important than ever to keep in mind what’s fiction and what’s fact. Check out a roundup of some of the falsehoods below.

In late December, approximately one month after Markle and Prince Harry’s engagement was announced, Star alleged Queen Elizabeth was upset over their choice of wedding cake. “Her Royal Highness rolled her eyes when the betrothed pair commissioned a banana cake for romantic reasons,” a so-called “source” was quoting as saying. The tabloid was seemingly inspired to make-up the dispute because Markle is a known fan of bananas and there was speculation that the flavor could be used in a cake for their wedding reception. But upon fact-checking, Gossip Cop confirmed the quotes were fake and the alleged dilemma was not true. We were proven right in March, when the actual flavor of the wedding cake was revealed. As opposed to choosing banana, the bride and groom actually commissioned a lemon elderflower cake that would have “bright flavors of spring.”

Star offered up another silly story in January, when it claimed Kim Kardashian was angling for a wedding invite. Branding her a “royalty-obsessed reality diva,” the outlet maintained she was “doing everything in her power” to be at the big event. That supposedly included offering to have her husband, Kanye West, “sing at their reception, purely so she can be his plus-one.” The only remotely truthful aspect was that West and Prince Harry had hung out in the past. But a rep for Kardashian dismissed the notion that she was trying to get invited to the wedding as “ridiculous.” Furthermore, West can’t perform at the wedding regardless, since he’s currently in Wyoming finishing up multiple albums.

Of course, it’s not only the American gossip media that’s been spinning bogus narratives in the build-up to the wedding. In February, Gossip Cop busted Heat, a UK tabloid, for laughably claiming Markle had a British “bucket list.” The magazine wanted readers to believe the “Suits” star had gathered “places she wants to visit and exceedingly British things she’d like to try,” with Prince Harry “promising” to take her “for a spin on the London Eye.” As we pointed out then, the items on this purported “bucket list” read like something that could be found for tourists on TripAdvisor. In addition, Markle had already visited Buckingham Palace as a teenager and took in other UK sites during a European tour. She had no need to go exploring before her wedding as she had already done so years ago.

Queen Elizabeth was dragged back into the rumor mill in March, when the Australian version of Woman’s Day claimed she ordered Prince Harry and Markle to stop showing PDA. It was specifically claimed she “warned Harry to tone down the public displays of affection… and start acting more prim and proper like other royals,” such as his brother and Kate Middleton. But as Gossip Cop highlighted, Prince William and Middleton have actually shown PDA on a number of occasions. What’s more is that there is no ban on PDA for the royal family, contrary to the outlet’s allegation that such gestures are against protocol.

The tabloid’s sister publication, Woman’s Day New Zealand, indicated that same month that it was just as clueless when it alleged Markle’s parents were back together and “talking about getting married again.” The magazine insisted “wedding fever is contagious,” and that it was “preparations” for their daughter’s special day that led her mom Doria and dad Thomas to reconcile. It was even claimed that it was Markle’s “dearest wish for them to tie the knot” again, and that she planned on throwing her mom the bouquet at her wedding. In actuality, as Gossip Cop reported in March, it’s unlikely there will be a flower toss, as the bouquet will probably be preserved to be placed at the grave of the unnamed warrior at Westminster Abbey, which is a tradition that dates back to the 1920s.

We also noted that while Markle’s parents would be involved in her wedding, there was no evidence that they had “rekindled their romance.” And now it couldn’t be more apparent that they didn’t. While Markle’s father underwent heart surgery this week, her mom traveled to London in advance of Saturday’s nuptials. All of the reputable reporting about Thomas being unable to walk the bride down the aisle has stressed that he and Doria are divorced, and that they’ve had separate interactions with Markle over the years. Quite obviously, there’s been no romantic reunion.

With the royal wedding finally taking place this weekend, Gossip Cop expects that over the next year, the tabloids will transition to storylines about marriage problems and pregnancies.
