Meghan Markle does not have a “secret royal maid of honor,” despite a new claim. In fact, it was already announced that Saturday’s wedding with Prince Harry won’t feature a maid of honor at all. Gossip Cop can bust an untrue report.
On Tuesday, just days before the nuptials, RadarOnline is exclaiming in a headline, “Meet Meghan’s Secret Royal Maid of Honor!” The site claims to have “secret details” about the wedding, including Markle’s “wedding planner maid of honor pal.” That is said to be stylist Jessica Mulroney, whose friendship with the “Suits” star has been reported on by a number of outlets.
According to this latest story, Mulroney has been serving as Markle’s “unofficial wedding planner,” and a so-called “source” is quoted as saying, “Jessica has been the person secretly masterminding Meghan’s wedding.” The blog goes on to contend that both the stylist and her family will have key roles on the big day. It’s specifically alleged Mulroney’s young daughter is “tipped to be Meghan and Prince Harry’s flower girl,” and “has been in training for the role for months.”
Unsurprisingly, however, the outlet has zero evidence to back any of this up, aside from oddly asserting Mulroney’s little girl “sometimes sports a diamond encrusted tiara,” which is supposedly “similar in the design to the tiara Princess Diana wore at her nuptials.” It isn’t clear how wearing a tiara qualifies as “training” to be a flower girl. The website further claims Mulroney’s sons “are also thought to be in line for duties as page boys,” and as proof, points to a December Instagram post in which Mulroney is showing her twin boys how to wear ties. Of course, that doesn’t substantiate anything about the children being page boys, nor do any of the other social media posts referenced.
As for Mulroney herself, it’s alleged she has “landed the honor of acting as the future princess’ maid of honor” after helping Markle rise in Canada’s social society when the star moved to Toronto for “Suits.” The online publication’s alleged tipster claims, “Meghan knows she has her to thank for giving her the abilities to cope with running in royal circles. She’s now going to repay her by highlighting her friend’s wedding planning and stylist business by making her maid of honor at her wedding.”
But while some in the media have speculated Mulroney has played a role in the wedding planning, no one at the palace has ever actually confirmed her involvement. Kesington Palace has formally named the florist, photographer, cake baker and other key people with duties before and during the event, but Mulroney has never been named an official player in the event. What’s more, though, is that opposed to her being selected as a member of the bridal party, the palace revealed last week that Markle will not be having a maid of honor at her wedding at all.
A spokesperson explained, “She has a very close-knit circle of friends and she didn’t want to choose one over another,” and noted that a group of pals, not specifically Mulroney, have been “actively involved in helping [Markle] prepare for the day.” As People has reported, it’s still possible Mulroney’s children could serve among Markle’s bridesmaids and page boys, though such positions are typically given to those connected to the royal family. In a wedding update from Markle and Prince Harry’s communications secretary this past Friday, it was said fans would learn who will fulfill those roles during the “final week ahead of the wedding.”
The nuptials are just days away now, but there’s still been no announcement thus far. Regardless, this much is known without a doubt: Mulroney is not Markle’s “secret royal maid of honor,” and the bride will not have a maid of honor at the wedding.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, May 16, it was announced Mulroney’s children will be among the bridesmaids and page boys, as expected. There still will not be a maid of honor.
